Hello! My name is Eric Matheus and I'm currently 20 years old. I come from a city in South Florida called Boca Raton and I go by the alias “COSMIC” or ‘cosmicbeats” online. I've been making music for almost 6 years at this point.
1 - Was there a pivotal moment when you decided to follow your path?
As soon as I started to see the potential I had with my music is when I started to build the confidence to pursue a career in this. It was when I started to gain a following and my numbers started going up weekly to the point where I definitely knew I had to keep going with it. It was also the drive I had to just strive to be better.
2 - Can you tell us about the process of making your work?
Whenever I go about making a beat I usually will make whatever style that I'm listening to at the moment, this can range from hard/ hype stuff to even chill/ layback stuff it all depends on my mood as well. However, I usually like to challenge myself by coming across any sample/ loop and trying to manipulate it to the point where you can’t even tell what I sampled, to begin with.
3 - How do you know when a piece of work is accomplished? What’s your number 1 habit?
For me, I will know when a piece of work is accomplished pretty much based on how satisfied I'm with it. If I feel like it needs some more ill add to it and if not leave it alone. I also have to take into consideration sometimes to leave that extra space for the artist to fill in as well. I can be a perfectionist sometimes so just because of that I can spend hours or even just minutes on a beat.
4 - What drives and inspires you?
At the moment, It’s the people that I have around me, I'm always, especially when I'm at school back at my own place, surrounded by a bunch of really talented creatives and we learn from each other. The fact that we all share one thing in common, the passion we have for music, the energy is all there, the determination, it's just a great environment to be in as a music producer. Also aside from that, I have my own personal goals of taking my cosmic brand to the next level and having it become as established as it can be.
5 - What are you thankful for?
I'm definitely thankful for where I'm at right now, I can get caught up with life sometimes and forget all the blessings that I’ve received so there would be times where I would need to humble myself and really put a pause on things and look back on all that I've accomplished. I thank God for my talents and blessings and honestly can't wait for what's in store for me in the future, I just have to keep consistent and motivated to get where I want to be.
6 - Do you interact with the digital world/technology in your work?
I feel like I'm always surrounded by the digital world, I mean I use my computer for literally everything, whether it's djing, gaming, music, designing, school, streaming, entertainment, and a lot more.
7 - How does your daily routine look like?
Since I'm back up at my own place in Tallahassee I usually like to start my day off by going to the gym and then spending the rest of the day (if I don't got school going on) either making some beats, djing, engineering vocals, linking up with artists or producers, or just doing something productive. I definitely believe having balance is important when it comes to being a music producer because sometimes we can get caught with the whole grind part and completely forget about the other things that life has to offer us.
8 - What advice would you give to your younger self following your steps?
MAKE CONNECTIONS and NETWORK! I can’t stress this enough. There have been many connections that I've built in the past that have helped me grow as a person and as a music producer. Also not only will it help you personally but also career-wise because the more people you know in this industry the better.
9 - Why do you love what you do? Where can people find you? What’s the plan for 2020?
I love what I do because I love producing music like I love the feedback I get from my listeners seeing how happy it makes them or how it helps them get through their workout or day like I appreciate each and every one of my listeners. You can find me pretty much anywhere online but in person, I'll most likely be in Tallahassee as of now since I’m finishing school first before moving elsewhere. Also, if you hear the female voice tag saying “C-C-C-C-C-COSMIC” in any beats you know that's me ;). My plan for 2020 is really to drop my own merch line and continue to work/ develop the artists that I’m working with currently.
10 - How do you get in contact with the ROU / What does this movement mean to you?
I got in contact with the ROU movement through my boy HKMK, he’s the man and we definitely got some fire projects in the works that I’m excited about. I'm always down for interviews like this because it shows the other side of someone that many may not be exposed to online. You can definitely use this movement to better understand where producers come from and who they really are.
What should people be ready for in 2020?
Merch and obviously more projects!
